Laura Vandervoort is Funny, Thrilling, Sci-Fi Soap “Supergirl”

November 30th, 2011 Jan No comments

Even on my birthday there’s Laura Vandervoort news! Goody!

INTERVIEW: With V & SMALLVILLE; Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy & Seth MacFarlane; Laura Vandervoort is Funny, Thrilling, Sci-Fi Soap “Supergirl”

We know her – and love her – from her science fiction soaps V and SMALLVILLE, and so, when we recently had a chance to speak with with the beautiful and talented Laura Vanderwoort, we were curious to hear about what she’s been up to – and, what’s next?

As it turns out, she’s been super-busy, with new projects such as Seth MacFarlane’s new film Ted and the action feature This Means War with Tom Hardy and Reese Witherspoon – and, of course, ABC Family’s New Original Movie, Desperately Seeking Santa.

Yet, even as her film career takes off, Laura remains enthusiastic about her rumored SMALLVILLE spin-off, as well as her own family holiday traditions and personal guilty pleasures.

Here’s a transcript of the interview:

WE LOVE SOAPS TV: Your character is a little bit of a Scrooge, so I was curious how your own feelings about Christmas differ from Jennifer’s?
Laura Vandervoort Actually, it’s funny that you put it that way, because while we were filming it, I said to one of our producers, Irene, “Jennifer Walker’s pretty much the Scrooge in the film!” and I’ve never really played a character that people hate or want to hate. So that was kind of fun for me, and obviously, she learns her lesson.

‘Smallville’ and ‘V’ actress — a Toronto native — tries her hand at ‘human’ role

Behind the Screens with Joshua Maloni

When you star in television shows based on “Superman” and the ’80s cult classic “V,” as actress Laura Vandervoort did, you’re in for life with sci-fi fans.

As nice as that sounds, sci-fi success can also pigeonhole an actor, limiting potential roles to Mars explorers, alien hunters and parts in “Mega-creature” versus “Shark-a-something.”

Fortunately for Vandervoort, she’s managed to remain in the good graces of the former while departing from the latter.

In a shift from her “Supergirl” and “Lisa/Visitor” parts, Vandervoort recently filmed the action-packed, “Spy vs. Spy”-inspired “This Means War,” and the Seth MacFarlane comedy “Ted.”

Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, V) is back on TV this month with a new holiday movie – ABC Family’s Desperately Seeking Santa. The film premieres this Sunday, November 27, at 8/7c.

Vandervoort plays Laura Walker, a shopping mall marketing executive who has more than a little in common with Ebenezer Scrooge. Gunning for a promotion, she dreams up a new plan to bring in customers: a search for the hottest Santa in town. Will a hunky Kris Kringle melt her cold heart?

“It’s a great family film,” Vandervoort says, “but it’s also a very romantic, sweet story between these two very different people. She is the Scrooge of the film and she’s very focused on making it up the corporate ladder and she doesn’t realize what’s right in front of her, which is true love and family, which she doesn’t have.”

The light romantic comedy is a big departure for an actress best known for her sci-fi roles.

“Honestly, the fact that she was human was a small portion of the reason I chose to take it,” admits Vandervoort, “because I’d been playing so many out of this world characters.”

“…Sci-fi can be very serious, especially with V, we didn’t show emotion. So this film was a huge transition for me. It was nice to do these romantic scenes, it was a change for me and it was a lot of fun and it shows a different side of me.”

Vandervoort recommends the film for anyone looking to enjoy a little holiday spirit. “If you love Christmas films,” she says, “and you love that warm feeling watching them—your heart feels joy and you want to sit there with family, this is a great film.”

Laura Vandervoort Peta Ad convinces another Celebrity. Who?

November 3rd, 2011 Jan No comments

Who oh who is the Celebrity who Laura has convinced to not to carry Her Snakeskin Handbag?

It’s Reese Witherspoon!

PETA has a lot of work to do if they want to enforce their agenda in a winter where fur and snakeskin are two huge trends. They’ve just successfully made one high-profile example of Reese Witherspoon, who the organization targeted after she was seen walking around L.A. with a python-skin Chloe bag. When the photos surfaced, they sent her a video narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, whom she acted opposite in Walk the Line, which explains that the skin on her bag is obtained by nailing a snake’s head to a tree, skinning it alive, and then leaving it to languish for sometimes days before dying. From PETA’s blog:

Reese said that she was grateful for the information we had sent her, and we were so appreciative that she bagged the bag that we sent her flowers as a thank-you. It’s good timing, too: Her upcoming movie This Means War co-stars Laura Vandervoort, who just shot a naked exotic-skins ad for PETA, so now those two can slink down the red carpet together rocking mock croc and fake snake.

Sales of snakeskin fashion items in California has been illegal since 1970. In terms of getting their message out, making an example of someone like Witherspoon — who is known for being sweet (remember her pink wedding dress?) — was a smart move for PETA. She’s not the kind of star who can be exploited by animal rights’ activists for carrying an insensitive bag and easily weather choosing the bag over their message. Besides, can’t you just see her telling a red carpet reporter she’s “rocking mock croc” [wink!] ?
